Steel Fabrication in Ireland, Custom Built, Not Off the Shelf

What Is Steel Fabrication?
Steel fabrication is the process of cutting, shaping, bending and welding raw steel into the finished components used in construction — columns, beams, brackets, frames, custom metalwork. At Sullivan Steel, we run our own steel fabrication workshop in Wexford, which means we can produce custom and bespoke steelwork to exact specifications rather than relying on standard kits from third-party suppliers. We fabricate for agricultural, industrial and commercial projects across Ireland — everything from a one-off bracket to a complete structural frame. Most fabrication contractors work with pre-engineered components; we don't, which is why we handle projects that standard kit suppliers turn down.
Why Choose Sullivan Steel for Steel Fabrication
When you're hiring a steel fabricator in Ireland, what matters is whether they can actually make what you need — to the spec you need, in the timeframe you need. Most pure steel erectors can't fabricate at all. Most fabricators can't erect. Here's what Sullivan Steel offers:
In-house fabrication workshop. We have our own workshop in Wexford with the equipment, materials and certified team to fabricate steel components to spec. We're not outsourcing to a third party and adding their margin to your quote.
Fabrication AND erection under one roof. We're rare in Ireland — a contractor that both fabricates custom steel and erects it on-site. That means you don't have to coordinate between separate trades. One contractor, one quote, one team responsible for the whole job.
Custom dimensions and bespoke spec. Pre-engineered kits from major suppliers come in standard sizes with standard features. If your project needs a non-standard span, an unusual door layout, internal mezzanines, additional structural members, or any custom feature, we can fabricate it. Kit-only contractors can't.
Repairs and modifications. Because we fabricate from scratch, we can also fabricate replacement components for older buildings, structural reinforcements, and modifications to existing frames. Pure erectors can only work with new pre-fabricated steel.
On-site fabrication where needed. For complex installations and repairs, we bring fabrication capability to the site rather than the other way around. Welding, cutting, and on-site modifications when the project demands it.
Steel Fabrication Services We Offer
Sullivan Steel's fabrication workshop handles a wide range of structural and custom steelwork:
Structural steel fabrication. Columns, beams, rafters, trusses, purlins — full structural steel components fabricated to engineering specifications for buildings of any size and complexity.
Custom and bespoke steelwork. One-off projects, unusual specifications, custom dimensions, special features. When the standard kit doesn't fit, we make it fit.
Off-site fabrication. Components fabricated in our Wexford workshop and delivered to your site ready for installation. Standard approach for most agricultural and commercial projects.
On-site fabrication. Where the project requires welding, cutting or modifications on location — particularly for repairs, retrofits, and complex industrial installations.
Repairs and structural alterations. Replacing failed structural members, reinforcing existing buildings, fabricating components to match older buildings, structural upgrades.
Architectural metalwork. Bespoke metalwork for commercial premises — staircases, balustrades, custom features, architectural detailing.
Brackets, fixings and ancillary steel. The bits most fabricators turn down. We'll make the bracket, the bespoke flashing detail, the custom door frame.
Steel Fabrication Across Every Sector
Our Wexford workshop fabricates for projects across every sector in Ireland:
Agricultural fabrication. Custom farm sheds outside standard kit dimensions, bespoke livestock building features, repairs and reinforcements on older sheds. We work with farmers going through TAMS 3 grant applications and fabricate to scheme specifications.
Industrial fabrication. Structural steel for warehouses, factories and workshops, heavy structural components, crane runways, mezzanine floors, machinery mounting frames.
Commercial fabrication. Architectural steelwork for commercial premises, bespoke retrofit components, structural alterations on existing commercial buildings, custom metalwork.
Re-fabrication for repairs. Replacement components for older industrial and agricultural buildings, fabricated to match existing structural details — particularly relevant for buildings undergoing re-roofing or re-cladding where structural reinforcement is needed.
How Our Steel Fabrication Process Works
Every fabrication job we take on follows the same approach:
1. Project consultation. We talk through what you're trying to achieve, what the steelwork needs to do, and any specific dimensions or features.
2. Engineering and drawings. For structural fabrication, we work to engineering specifications — your own engineer's drawings, or we coordinate with a structural engineer if needed.
3. Material sourcing. Steel ordered to grade and section specification. Material availability shifts with the market — we'll let you know upfront if there are any lead-time considerations.
4. Workshop fabrication. Cutting, shaping, welding, drilling, surface treatment — work carried out in our Wexford workshop to your spec.
5. Quality control. Welds inspected, dimensions verified, finishes checked before anything leaves the workshop.
6. Delivery or on-site work. Components delivered to your site for installation, or we bring fabrication capability to the site for complex installations.
7. Erection and installation. If we're handling the erection too, the fabricated steel goes straight from workshop to site to assembled structure with one continuous team.
Certified Fabrication, Certified Steel
Steel fabrication isn't just welding — it's working to engineering specifications with traceable materials and proper certification.
Our standards:
- CE-marked steel — all structural steel we source is CE-marked with full traceability
- Certified welders — coded welding for structural components requiring certification
- Safe Pass and trade certifications across the full workshop and site team
- Public liability and employers liability insurance — full cover, documentation provided on request
For larger industrial and commercial projects requiring structural certification, we coordinate with structural engineers and provide all fabrication documentation. For the official certification standards on Irish construction, see the Health and Safety Authority.
Steel Fabrication for Projects Across Ireland
Our fabrication workshop is in Ballingly, Wellingtonbridge, Co. Wexford. From there:
Workshop fabrication and delivery: We deliver fabricated steel components anywhere in Ireland. Smaller projects across the South East — Wexford, Waterford, Wicklow, Carlow, Kilkenny, South Tipperary. Larger industrial and commercial work nationwide.
On-site fabrication: Our on-site fabrication capability travels with the project. For complex industrial installations and repairs, we work anywhere in Ireland.
If you're not sure whether we can handle your project remotely or whether on-site work is needed, ring us — we'll talk you through what's practical.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What's the difference between fabrication and erection? Fabrication is making the steel components — cutting, welding, shaping the columns, beams, and other parts. Erection is assembling those components into the finished structure on-site. Sullivan Steel does both, which is rare. Most contractors specialise in one or the other.
Q: Do you only fabricate steel for your own projects, or can I just hire you to fabricate? Both. We fabricate as part of our full-service erection projects, but we also take on standalone fabrication work — supplying steel components to other contractors, fabricating one-off items, repairing existing structural steel.
Q: Can you fabricate to custom dimensions or non-standard specs? Yes — that's the main reason clients come to us. Standard pre-engineered kits from major suppliers only come in standard sizes. We fabricate to exact specifications, including unusual spans, heights, layouts and features.
Q: How long does steel fabrication take? Lead times depend on project complexity and material availability. Standard structural fabrication 2–6 weeks. Custom or bespoke fabrication 4–8 weeks. Repairs and one-off components often faster.
Q: Do you fabricate to TAMS 3 scheme specifications? Yes — we work with farmers going through TAMS 3 applications and fabricate to scheme reference specifications as standard. See our TAMS 3 grant guide for full details.
